Note For Anyone Writing About Me

Guide to Writing About Me

I am an Autistic person, not a person with autism. I am also not Aspergers. The diagnosis isn't even in the DSM anymore, and yes, I agree with the consolidation of all autistic spectrum stuff under one umbrella. I have other issues with the DSM.

I don't like Autism Speaks. I'm Disabled, not differently abled, and I am an Autistic activist. Self-advocate is true, but incomplete.

Today,  I am participating in a Chinese speech contest. This is what I plan to say:

What is neurodiversity? It's the idea that neurological differences are not inherently bad, that we don't need to cure them. The neurodiversity movement started with autistics, and it has slowly grown to include dyslexics, dyspraxics, people with ADHD, and other neurological differences. (Sometimes even family members, though I didn't say so in the speech) I think neurodiversity is important for several reasons:
  1. Right now, we don't even really know why autistic people are autistic. If we don't know where neurological differences come from, how would we cure them anyways? Right now, we can't, and it may just be impossible. We still need to respect the people who have them, and we should still consider them a part of society, not some completely separate and different group.
  2. There's plenty of autistics, dyslexics, etc who think their neurological differences are a fundamental part of who they are. Respecting them includes respecting that opinion, and curing them would be hurting them.
  3. Regardless of what you think of neurological differences, saying "Because you have a neurological difference, you can't do anything" to someone is bad for the person and bad for society. Autistic people can be happy- they don't have to think their own lives are tragedies. Saying to them: "Your life must be horrible," will not help them. Keeping them from doing anything good will not help them, nor will it help society. Letting them do what they can and respecting their opinions helps both them and society.
If you want to help people with neurological differences, neurodiversity is a good way to start.

And if anyone wants the PinYin (phonetics in our alphabet) of the speech, here it is:
